B1 Bomber Interior - Dutch aviation photographer Roelof-Jan Gort recently posted photos on social media of his visit to RAF Fairford, where he got a close look at B-1Bs operating from there in support of Exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 2018. Some photos show the crew in a B-1B cockpit as they prepare for a mission. The only thing about the photos is that the standard gray finish that usually covers the interior of the B-1 cockpit is not there. In its place are red ones that I have never seen. The motif definitely gives "Bone's" cockpit a sci-fi feel, more like personal transport for a Star Wars villain than something you'd find on a monochromatic USAF flight line.
This B-1B has clearly received the latest avionics upgrade which gives the crew a partial 'glass' cockpit, better connectivity and a number of other improvements. Could this be a new standard feature? But why?

Doing it once seemed somewhat unlikely due to the strict rules regarding aircraft color modifications in the USAF and how clean it looks in photos.

In an effort to solve the mystery, I reached out to a source with years of experience in the B-1B community.
The source told me that it appears that the crew chief on this B-1B went to great lengths to "decorate" his aircraft and that minor interior modifications are permitted as long as they do not distract from the aircraft's mission or functionality. Some unique paint, decals, slogans and creative grip tape arrangements can be found on various fuselages. Still, this is a great complete and detailed job and looks like it came from the factory in the photos, a testament to those who spent the time building and installing it.
The 34th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota - also known by its nickname, the Thunderbirds - owns this aircraft. The unit has one of the richest histories of any USAF squadron. Founded in 1917, it was directly involved in the Doolittle attack on Japan in retaliation for the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. The unit's crest and tail band are predominantly deep red, so it would be a good manifestation of the squadron's esprit de corps to bring those hues into the cockpit.
So there you have it folks. There is a B-1B in the wild with a crimson cockpit!
