The US Marine Corps has extended the retirement date for its AV-8B Harrier II to 2030, with most of the fleet remaining active until 2027, according to Boeing, which supports the 1980s-era strike aircraft.

The Harrier was due to be retired in 2015. Julie Praiss, Boeing Defense vice president of tactical aircraft and weapons support, said the challenge will be to maintain vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) for another 17 years. . Seventy-five percent of Harrier's suppliers are based in the UK. With the UK government's decision in 2010 to phase out its BAE Systems Harrier GR9s as part of its strategic defense and security review, the supplier base has shrunk by a third, forcing Boeing to look for different sources of supply.

"All these things become more difficult when you have a smaller inventory," said Praiss, who said on May 21 in St. Luis

The Marines currently have 134 Harriers, based at Cherry Point, N.C. and Yuma, Arizona, air stations and China Lake, California, Naval Air Station, according to Boeing. Six Harriers were destroyed and two seriously injured by the Taliban in September 2012 at Camp Bastion, a British military base in Afghanistan. The Spanish Navy has 17 aircraft and the Italian Navy 16.

In June 2007, Boeing signed a five-year, $258 million performance-based logistics contract, with an option for an additional five years, to support the tri-nation Harrier fleet. Praiss said the company currently provides $80 million in annual contract support to the US. Naval Supply Systems Command, which works with the Defense Logistics Agency, provides materiel management. Rolls-Royce, the manufacturer of the aircraft's Pegasus F402-RR-406 turbofan, is responsible for maintaining the engine.

Boeing has also contributed to the initial evaluation of potential capability enhancements for the Harrier, including Link 16 interoperability, weapons deployment for AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, a pilot helmet and "radar relevance and sustainment" beyond the Raytheon APG-65 radar. to the aircraft as part of the AV-8BII Plus upgrade. "We're here to keep airplanes relevant, reliable, safe and sustainable," Praiss said. The AV-8B Harrier II is America's only short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft in the current inventory. Originally flown in the late 1960s, the Harrier has undergone several upgrades that have increased safety, range and lethality. The AV-8B is a key component of the Marine Corps' "store STOVL force" concept to support Marines in harsh conditions in expeditionary environments.

Its 22,000 pounds of thrust allows the Harrier II to hover like a helicopter and then explode like an airplane at near-supersonic speeds. Like all military aircraft, this aircraft is used for a variety of missions, including attacking and destroying surface and air targets, escorting helicopters, performing air-to-air defense, providing reconnaissance, and applying offensive and defensive support with its arsenal. missiles, bombs and an integrated 25 mm cannon. The Harrier II offers the versatility to perform almost any mission, providing the perfect blend of firepower and mobility to effectively engage the adversaries our ground forces engage.

The AV-8B V/STOL attack aircraft was designed to replace the AV-8A and A-4M light attack aircraft. The Marine Corps' requirement for a V/STOL light strike force has been well documented since the late 1950s. Relying on tactical mobility, responsiveness, reduced operating costs, and flexibility both afloat and ashore, V/STOL aircraft are uniquely suited to the unique combat and expeditionary requirements of the Marine Corps. The AV-8BII+ has the APG-65 radar common to the F/A-18, as well as all the systems and functions of the previous AV-8BII.

For the first generation aircraft operated by the US Marine Corps as the AV-8A and AV-8C, see Hawker Siddeley Harrier.

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation ground attack aircraft of the Harrier family, capable of vertical or short takeoff and landing (V/STOL). The aircraft is primarily used for light attack or multi-role missions, from close air support of ground troops to armed reconnaissance. The AV-8B is used by the United States Navy (USMC), the Spanish Navy, and the Italian Navy. One variant of the AV-8B, the British Aerospace Harrier II, was developed for the British military, while another, the TAV-8B, is a two-seat trainer.

The project that eventually led to the creation of the AV-8B began in the early 1970s as a US-UK collaboration to address the operational shortcomings of the first-generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier. Early efforts focused on a larger and more powerful Pegasus engine to significantly improve the Harrier's capabilities. Due to budget constraints, the UK abandoned the project in 1975. After the UK withdrew, McDonnell Douglas redesigned the former AV-8A Harrier to create the AV-8B. While retaining the overall design of its predecessor, the aircraft features a new, larger composite wing with an additional hard tip on each side, a raised cockpit, a redesigned fuselage, and other structural and aerodynamic improvements. The aircraft is powered by an upgraded version of the Pegasus. The AV-8B made its home flight in November 1981 and entered service with the USMC in January 1985. Later upgrades added night attack capability and radar to the AV-8B(NA) and AV-8B Harrier II Plus versions, respectively. . A larger version called the Harrier III was also considered but not pursued. The United Kingdom, through British Aerospace, joined the improved Harrier project as a partner in 1981, providing a significant portion of the project's work. After company mergers in the 1990s, Boeing and BAE Systems have jointly supported the program. About 340 aircraft were produced during a 22-year production program that ended in 2003.

Typically operating from small aircraft carriers, large amphibious assault ships, and single forward operating bases, the AV-8B has participated in numerous military and humanitarian operations, proving to be a versatile asset. US Army General Norman Schwarzkopf called the USMC Harrier II one of the most important weapons of the Gulf War. It has also served in Operation Under Freedom in Afghanistan since 2001, in the Iraq War since 2003, and in 2011 in Operation Dawn Odyssey in Libya. Italian and Spanish Harrier IIs have participated in overseas conflicts alongside NATO coalitions. In its service history, the AV-8B has had a high accident rate related to the proportion of time spent in critical takeoff and landing phases. The USMC and Italian Navy are replacing the AV-8B with the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, with the former expected to operate its Harriers by 2025.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, first-generation Harriers entered service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and USMC, but were handicapped in range and payload. In a short takeoff and landing configuration, the AV-8A (US Harrier designation) carried less than half the 4,000 lb (1,800 kg) payload of the smaller A-4 Skyhawk, at a more restricted radius.

To counter this, Hawker Siddeley and McDonnell Douglas began developing a more capable version of the Harrier in 1973. Initial efforts focused on an improved Pegasus engine, called the Pegasus 15, piloted by Bristol Siddeley.

Although more powerful, its diameter was too large to fit the 70mm Harrier.
