The AN/GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gun system was specifically built to act as an Air Support "Tank Buster" for the US Air Force. Like the earlier M61 20mm Vulcan design, the Avenger uses seven barrels to achieve a rate of fire of 3,900 rounds per minute.

The Avenger fires a combination of 30mm electric PGU-13/B High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) rounds and PGU-14/B Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) rounds. While the HEI rounds give the Avenger the ability to destroy light vehicles, the weapon's real explosive power is provided by the API rounds, each containing half a kilogram of dense uranium. At 1,200 meters (4,000 ft), a 2-second burst from the AN/GAU-8 will deliver 100 rounds containing 65 pounds of DU and place 80 percent of those projectiles within 20 feet of the target.

The AN/GAU-8 is used exclusively by the United States Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II, a dedicated Close Air Support aircraft originally designed around the Avenger weapon system.
On 16 Nov 1970, the Air Force issued a request for the production of 30 mm rapid-fire cannons for use on the A-X Close Air Support aircraft. In June 1971, General Electric and Philco Ford were selected to build a prototype gun, called the GAU-8. In addition to the development of the rifle, the contract involved the production of four types of ammunition: an armor-piercing rifle, a high-explosive grenade, a high-explosive weapon and a high-performance drill.
The first flight test of the GAU-8 was carried out on 26 February 1974. The gun was fired for the first time in a combat flight on 19 June 1974. The Avenger fired more than 39,000 rounds. during about 60 test flights. The gun was tested at a wide range of altitudes: from as high as 25,000 feet to as low as 100 feet; at speeds from 135 to 415 knots; with all emotions (variation, pitch and pitch) up to five Gs.
The test program went well and the cancellation of the first test mission did not occur until 12 November 1975, when the gun was loaded. The test program identified a number of problems, including a pile of gunpowder residue on the canopy and problems getting gunpowder into the engines. Both problems were resolved and the corrections were incorporated into the production aircraft starting with No. 16 (earlier flights were rearranged).

The General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger is a water-launching vehicle with seven 30 mm Gatling barrels normally mounted on the US Air Force's Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. Designed specifically for the anti-tank role, the Avenger delivers powerful rounds with a high rate of fire.

According to an Air Force Flight Test Center news release, the GAU-8/A is extremely accurate and can fire up to 3,900 rounds per minute without any problems. A 30 mm shell has twice the range, half the time it takes to fire, and three times the weight of an anti-aircraft gun.
Removing the mounted GAU-8 from the A-10 first requires placing a jack under the tail of the aircraft to prevent it from tipping over, as the cannon makes up most of the aircraft's weight first.

The muzzle velocity of the GAU-8/A is about the same as the M61 Vulcannon, but the GAU-8/A uses heavier ammunition and has a higher caliber bullet. The flight time of the projectile at 4,000 feet is 30 percent of the M61 round; The GAU-8/A projectile decelerates significantly after exiting the barrel and falls disproportionately, about 10 feet away.

The accuracy of the GAU-8/A when mounted on the A-10 is rated at 5 milliradan 80 percent, meaning that 80 percent of the rounds fired will hit within a cone with an angle of 1 milliradan five; this corresponds to a circle 40 feet in diameter in a 4,000-foot gun design area. By comparison, M61 has a flux of 8 milliradians.
